Square Enix ads pushing Facebook "hits" is nixed as cyberbullying

Game developer Square Enix took down its 'Hitman: Absolution' ad campaign after public outcry over its promotion of cyberbullying; "Square Enix wants you to put a hit on your friends" was the company's email slogan, encouraging gamers to threaten their friends on Facebook.

This was good to see: What looked like a truly anti-social media company, game developer Square Enix saw irresponsibility for what it was and quickly reversed a stupid marketing decision. I?d like to take it as a sign that ? in this very social media environment where users are co-producers with the providers of their media experiences ? media companies and users alike will be increasingly wise to the power that users have just by the nature of social media.

Working late is less optional than you think - Business Management ...

Question: ?Management keeps pushing me to work longer hours, but I don?t believe this is necessary. I think they just want to get more out of me. The technology company where I work has recently begun outsourcing jobs to other countries, so they apparently don?t plan to hire more people here.

?A few months ago, I finally refused to stay late anymore, citing the need to spend time with my family. Since then, I have been deliberately sidelined from important projects. My last performance review included negative comments about my unwillingness to work extra hours.

?Under normal circumstances, I would look for another position, but right now the job market for people in my field is very tight. I can?t afford to lose my paycheck, so what should I do??? Resentful

Answer: You appear to have a serious case of tunnel vision, so let me try to expand your view. Positions in your field are scarce, your company is sending work out of the country, and you can?t afford to be unemployed. Does this seem like a good time to battle with management about working hours?

In the business world, professional people are typically expected to work more than their scheduled 40 hours per week. This is especially true in technology companies, which have always had a ?do whatever it takes? culture.

If you routinely head for home while everyone else is still plugging away, you will look like a slacker, even if you?re not. And your personal ?no overtime? rule will be viewed as a lack of team spirit. If employees in your field were in short supply, you might have more leverage, but that's apparently not the case right now.

Your exclusion from projects and negative performance review represent serious warning signs. These factors could easily put you at the top of a layoff list, so you might want to reevaluate your position on working late. And you might want to do it quickly.

Microsoft says settlement reached in botnet case

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Microsoft says it has settled a computer-fraud case against a website operated by a Chinese businessman that had become a major hub for illicit Internet activity.

The software company announced Tuesday that Peng Yong, the registered owner of 3322.org, has agreed to work with Microsoft and China's computer emergency response team to prevent cybercriminals from using the domain. 3322.org served as home base for the Nitol botnet and more than 500 other types of malware, Microsoft officials said in documents filed in federal court last month.

Peng will steer any infected traffic from 3322.org to a special computer called a sinkhole that will be managed by Chinese authorities, according to the agreement.

Peng initially denied the allegations in the lawsuit, which Microsoft said it dropped after reaching the settlement.

California Governor Vetoes ?Anti-Arizona? Law

Washington, D.C. ? On Sunday, California Gov. Jerry Brown vetoed the ?Transparency and Responsibility Using State Tools? Act, or TRUST Act (AB1081). This legislation limits local law enforcement implementation of the Secure Communities program by setting clear standards for local governments to comply with requests from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to detain people for deportation. The following is a statement by Ali Noorani, Executive Director of the National Immigration Forum:

?Gov. Brown missed an opportunity to rein in Secure Communities, a program that has strayed far from its stated goal of identifying only the most dangerous criminals. As the state with the highest number of deportations under Secure Communities, California knows too well the damaging impact of this poorly-designed enforcement program.

?The TRUST Act would have helped California?s law enforcement prioritize their valuable resources to focus on the true threats to public safety. Moreover, by enacting this ?anti-Arizona? law, the Golden State would have sent a clear message that states can do better than Arizona ? that they can still keep Secure Communities within its bounds.

?All may not be lost for the TRUST Act. In his veto message, Gov. Brown promised to work with lawmakers to rework the legislation. We hope that California lawmakers and Gov. Brown can soon find a way forward for this important public safety and government efficiency measure.?

Huge tax increase looms at year-end 'fiscal cliff'

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A typical middle-income family making $40,000 to $64,000 a year could see its taxes go up by $2,000 next year if lawmakers fail to renew a lengthy roster of tax cuts set to expire at the end of the year, according to a new report Monday

Taxpayers across the income spectrum would be hit with large tax hikes, the Tax Policy Center said in its study, with households in the top 1 percent income range seeing an average tax increase of more than $120,000, while a family making between $110,000 to $140,000 could see a tax hike in the $6,000 range.

Taxpayers across the income spectrum will get slammed with increases totaling more than $500 billion ? a more than 20 percent increase ? with nine out of 10 households being affected by the expiration of tax cuts enacted under both President Barack Obama and his predecessor, George W. Bush.

The expiring provisions include Bush-era cuts on wage and investment income and cuts for married couples and families with children, among others. Also expiring is a 2 percentage point temporary payroll tax cut championed by Obama.

The looming expiration of the large roster of tax cuts is one of the issues confronting voters in November, with the chief difference between Obama and GOP candidate Mitt Romney being the tax treatment of wealthier earners. Obama is calling for permitting rates on individual income exceeding $200,000 and family incoming over $250,000 to go back to Clinton-era rates of as much as 39.6 percent.

Both candidates call for rewriting the tax code next year, but any such effort promises to be difficult and could take considerable time.

Monday's study, by the independent Tax Policy Center, deals with the immediate increases set to slap taxpayers in January under the existing framework of the tax code.

Few are talking of renewing Obama's payroll tax cut, even though that would mean a healthy tax increase for many working people. Working families with modest incomes would be hit hard as the child tax credit would shrink from a maximum of $1,000 per child to $500.

As a result, a married couple earning $50,000 with three dependent children that currently receives an almost $1,500 income tax refund largely due to the child tax credit would see their fortunes reversed by more than $3,000 next year and pay more than $1,500 in income taxes while seeing their payroll taxes go up by $1,000 if the full menu of tax cuts expire.

"It's just a huge, huge number," said Eric Toder, one of the authors of the study.

Economists warn that the looming tax hikes, combined with $109 billion in automatic spending cuts scheduled to take effect in January, could throw the fragile economy back into recession if Washington doesn't act. The automatic spending cuts are coming due because of the failure of last year's deficit "supercommittee" to strike a bargain. The combination of the sharp tax hikes and spending cuts has been dubbed a "fiscal cliff."

"The fiscal cliff threatens an unprecedented tax increase at year end," says the report. "Taxes would rise by more than $500 billion in 2013 ? an average of almost $3,500 per household ? as almost every tax cuts enacted since 2001 would expire."

Cumulatively, the country would see a 5 percentage point jump in its average tax rate, which works out to taxes on the top 1 percent jumping by more than 7 percentage points and about 4 percentage points for most people earning below $100,000 a year.

Put another way, people in the $40,000-$64,000 income range would see their average federal tax rate jump from 14 percent to 17.8 percent ? or an increase in their overall federal bill of 27 percent.

All told, almost 90 percent of all households would face a tax increase, though the top 20 percent of earners would bear 60 percent of the overall cost. Across all households the tax increases would average almost $3,500.

The expiration of cuts on capital gains and stock dividends is a key reason why wealthier people would see a higher increase in their tax burdens.

Republicans controlling the House have also called for the expiration of Obama-backed tax cuts for the working poor, including expansions of the earned income and child tax credits.

But all sides are calling for the renewal of Bush-era tax rates for everyone else. Without a renewal of those rates, a married couple would pay a 28 percent rate on taxable income exceeding $72,300 instead of the 25 percent rate they now pay. And the 10 percent rate paid on the first $8,900 of income would jump to 15 percent.

The new top rate of 39.6 percent would kick in for income over $397,000. The current top rate is 35 percent rate.

Marine animals could hold key to looking young: Sea cucumbers, sea urchins can change elasticity of collagen

ScienceDaily (Oct. 1, 2012) ? Sea cucumbers and sea urchins are able to change the elasticity of collagen within their bodies, and could hold the key to maintaining a youthful appearance, according to scientists at Queen Mary, University of London.

The researchers investigated the genes of marine creatures such as sea urchins and sea cucumbers, known as echinoderms. They found the genes for "messenger molecules" known as peptides, which are released by cells and tell other cells in their bodies what to do.

The study was published online in the journals PLOS ONE and General and Comparative Endocrinology.

Project leader Professor Maurice Elphick, from Queen Mary's School of Biological and Chemical Sciences, said: "Probably the most exciting discovery from our research was finding genes encoding peptides that cause rapid stiffening or softening of collagen in the body wall of sea cucumbers.

"Although sea urchins and sea cucumbers may not look much like us, we are actually quite closely related to them. As we get older, changes in collagen cause wrinkling of our skin, so if we can find out how peptides cause the body wall of a sea cucumber to quickly become stiff or soft then our research might lead to new ways to keeping skin looking young and healthy."

The scientists analysed the DNA sequences of thousands of genes in the purple sea urchin Strongylocentrotus purpuratus and the edible sea cucumber Apostichopus japonicus and specifically searched for genes encoding peptide messenger molecules. Rapid advances in technology used to sequence genes made the research possible.

"When the human genome was sequenced over a decade ago it cost millions of pounds -- now all of the genes in an animal can be sequenced for just a few thousand pounds," Professor Elphick said.

"We also found that sea urchins have a peptide that is very similar to calcitonin, a hormone that regulates our bones to make sure that they remain strong," Professor Elphick said.

"So it will be fascinating to find out if calcitonin-type peptides have a similar sort of role in spiny-skinned creatures like sea urchins."

"These types of advances in basic science are fascinating in their own right but they are also important because they underpin the medical breakthroughs that lead to improvement in the quality of people's lives."

Ivory Coast arrests former Gbagbo spokesman again

ACCRA, Ghana (AP) ? A lawyer says the spokesman of Ivory Coast's former president was arrested Friday, just days after being released on bail after an extradition hearing.

Lawyer Lucie Bourtoumieux said Saturday her client, Justin Kone Katinan, was arrested for the second time on Friday. Bourtoumieux, who also represents former Ivory Coast President Laurent Gbagbo, said Ivory Coast President Alassane Ouattara's government had new "allegations of blood crimes" against her client.

Katinan, a registered asylum seeker in Ghana, was arrested in August after Ivory Coast issued an international warrant charging him with economic crimes.

Gbagbo is awaiting trial for crimes against humanity at the International Criminal Court at The Hague. His refusal to concede defeat to now President Ouattara in 2010 plunged the nation into months of violence, killing at least 3,000.

Baghdad to transfer oil payments to Iraq Kurds today

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Oil payments from Baghdad to Iraq's Kurdish region will be transferred today, Kurdish Energy Minister Ashti Hawrami said on Sunday, ending a heated tug-of-war over the issue, at least for now.

Baghdad and Kurdistan agreed earlier this month to draw a line under a dispute over oil payments after the latter pledged to continue exports and Baghdad said it would pay foreign companies working there.

Kurdistan has riled Baghdad by signing deals with foreign oil majors, such as Exxon and Chevron, contracts the central government rejects as illegal.

"Payments will be transferred to the Kurdish regional government today: that's what I've been told in Baghdad today," Hawrami told reporters in the Iraqi capital.

Hawrami was in Baghdad for a meeting also attended by Iraqi Oil Minister Abdul-Kareem Luaibi, at which they were due to discuss a long-awaited oil and gas law.

More than nine years after the toppling of Saddam Hussein, the OPEC member still has no binding hydrocarbon law. A 2007 draft national oil law that aims to resolve the disputes over crude has been caught up in political infighting.

The oil contracts row is part of a broader battle between the Baghdad government and Kurdistan over oil rights, territory and regional autonomy that is straining Iraq's uneasy federal union.

John A. Rogers, a professor of materials science and engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, is working to build electronic devices that vanish on purpose.</p><p>In a study published this week in the journal Science, Rogers and colleagues described how they assembled a toolbox of tiny biodegradable components made of silicon, magnesium and silk that can completely dissolve in the body. In a conversation with The Times, Rogers explained the virtues of such "transient electronics" ? and why someday you might want your smartphone to disappear too.</p><p><strong>What do you mean by "transient electronics"?</strong></p> <p>It is a new kind of electronics whose characteristic feature is that it physically disappears over time in an engineered, controlled, programmable way. The materials dissolve in water or in biofluids and yield a biocompatible end product. As a result a number of new, interesting application opportunities open up.</p><p><strong>Like what?</strong></p><p>Like a biomedical implant that's designed to either diagnose or treat an internal wound ? and then simply disappear so you don't have to go back in and fish it out.</p><p><strong>How do you make electronics dissolve?</strong></p><p>You have to go back and look at all the different components that are required to build an electronic circuit ? such as semiconductors, conducting materials, and substrate materials ? and then find materials that are transient and can also work well together to yield high-performance electronic properties. We wound up with a complete palette of materials that allow us to do sophisticated things, in which all of the constituents will completely dissolve in water or biofluids.</p><p><strong>And these are made of silicon, magnesium and silk?</strong></p><p>Yes. Silicon is the semiconductor material, and it is interesting because it is the platform material for the vast majority of electronics that are out there today. It's also interesting because even though it has only a very modest dissolution rate in water and biofluids, the way that we use it ? in ultra-thin sheets ? it will completely dissolve. The end product of that dissolution is silicic acid, which is a well-known nutritional supplement, so we think the prospects for long-term biocompatibility are very good.</p><p><strong>What does magnesium replace in the circuit?</strong></p><p>Copper or aluminum ? it is the conductor. Its conductivity is not quite as good as copper's, so you take a slight hit there, but it's water-soluble. It is also a common ingredient in multivitamin tablets, so it's another type of material that's good for circuits and probably not bad for the body.</p><p><strong>And the silicon and magnesium components are embedded in the silk?</strong></p><p>Yes. Our collaborators at Tufts University have figured out how to take silkworm cocoons, purify the material, and make coatings and packages out of it. Silk is water-soluble.</p><p>The other key aspect about it is that you can control its dissolution rate by controlling its degree of crystallinity. You can immerse it in water or biofluids for up to a year without completely dissolving it. So we can use it as a package to encapsulate the circuits.</p><p><strong>What can these circuits do?</strong></p><p>In our Science paper, we describe a device designed to mitigate the effects of surgical site infections. These turn out to be one of the leading causes of readmission into the hospital after a surgical procedure. A lot of bacteria these days are antibiotic-resistant, so it's more and more difficult to treat them with drugs. We would like to treat them with transient electronics in the form of a kind of applique that goes into the body at the site of the surgery just before the patient is sewn up. It heats the site of the surgery about 5 degrees centigrade ? a change in temperature that is sufficient to kill bacteria.</p><p>We control the silk properties in the package to last about two weeks. That turns out to be the most critical period of risk for a surgical site. After that point, in most cases the wound is healed, and the device is no longer needed. It just disappears completely into the body.</p><p><strong>How does the device get power?</strong></p><p>Wirelessly. The device has a special antenna built into it, and we can expose it to radio-frequency radiation from an external source through the skin. While RIM did expand the total BlackBerry user base to 80 million, its phone shipments dropped from 7.8 million to 7.4 million and were braced by shipments of just 130,000 <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/PlayBook/">PlayBooks</a>, or half as many tablets as were delivered in the spring.</p><p> The sunshine is mostly found in the total picture. RIM says it's still on track to deliver the first BlackBerry 10 phones in early 2013; while the smartphone maker is bracing for an operating loss in its ongoing third quarter, the higher revenue and reduced losses suggest to CEO Thorsten Heins that RIM is getting its fiscal house in order before BlackBerry 10 (hopefully) renews interest. The combination of two neuroprotective therapies, voluntary physical exercise, and the daily intake of melatonin has been shown to have a synergistic effect against brain deterioration in rodents with three different mutations of Alzheimer's disease.</p> <p>A study carried out by a group of researchers from the Barcelona Biomedical Research Institute (IIBB), in collaboration with the University of Granada and the Autonomous University of Barcelona, shows the combined effect of neuroprotective therapies against Alzheimer's in mice.</p> <p>Daily voluntary exercise and daily intake of melatonin, both of which are known for the effects they have in regulating circadian rhythm, show a synergistic effect against brain deterioration in the 3xTg-AD mouse, which has three mutations of Alzheimer's disease.</p> <p>"For years we have known that the combination of different anti-aging therapies such as physical exercise, a Mediterranean diet, and not smoking adds years to one's life," Coral Sanfeliu, from the IIBB, explained. "Now it seems that melatonin, the sleep hormone, also has important anti-aging effects."</p> <p>The experts analysed the combined effect of sport and melatonin in 3xTg-AD mice which were experiencing an initial phase of Alzheimer's and presented learning difficulties and changes in behaviour such as anxiety and apathy.</p> <p>The mice were divided into one control group and three other groups which would undergo different treatments: exercise -unrestricted use of a running wheel-, melatonin -a dose equivalent to 10 mg per kg of body weight-, and a combination of melatonin and voluntary physical exercise. In addition, a reference group of mice were included which presented no mutations of the disease.</p> <p>"After six months, the state of the mice undergoing treatment was closer to that of the mice with no mutations than to their own initial pathological state. From this we can say that the disease has significantly regressed," Sanfeliu states.</p> <p>The results, which were published in the journal <em>Neurobiology of Aging</em>, show a general improvement in behaviour, learning, and memory with the three treatments.</p> <p>These procedures also protected the brain tissue from oxidative stress and provided good levels of protection from excesses of amyloid beta peptide and hyperphosphorylated TAU protein caused by the mutations. In the case of the mitochondria, the combined effect resulted in an increase in the analysed indicators of improved performance which were not observed independently.</p> <p><strong>Treatment not easily transferable to humans</strong></p> <p>"Transferring treatments which are effective in animals to human patients is not always consistent, given that in humans the disease develops over several years, so that when memory loss begins to surface, the brain is already very deteriorated," the IIBB expert points out.</p> <p>However, several clinical studies have found signs of physical and mental benefits in sufferers of Alzheimer's resulting from both treatments. The authors maintain that, until an effective pharmacological treatment is found, adopting healthy living habits is essential for reducing the risk of the disease appearing, as well as reducing the severity of its effects.</p> <p><strong>The melatonin debate</strong></p> <p>The use of melatonin, a hormone synthesized from the neurotransmitter serotonin, has positive effects which can be used for treating humans. With the approval of melatonin as a medication in the European Union in 2007, clinical testing on this molecule has been increasing. It has advocates as well as detractors, and the scientific evidence has not yet been able to unite the differing views.</p> <p>According to the Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database, melatonin is probably effective in sleeping disorders in children with autism and mental retardation and in blind people; and possibly effective in case of jet-lag, sunburns and preoperative anxiety.</p> <p>"However, other studies which use melatonin as medication show its high level of effectiveness," Dar?o Acu?a-Castroviejo explained. He has been studying melatonin for several years at the Health Sciences Technology Park of the University of Granada.</p> <p>The expert points out that international consensus already exists, promoted by the British Association for Psychopharmacology -also published in the Journal of Psychopharmacology in 2010-, which has melatonin as the first choice treatment for insomnia in patients above the age of 55. So, I thought I would take a look at some of the innovations that I?ve seen and try to predict some of the things that we?re likely to see in the future.</p><p>First of all, I?m sitting here recording post with Siri on my iPad, which I just think it?s awesome. I no longer have to type in my blog posts. That lead me to think about a world that?s more audio-based, than text-based ? where many of our daily tasks are completed using software such as Siri to record our thoughts and transmit them in digital space. We?ve already seen a world where social media is more visual, is it possible that the future will be audio?</p><p>Maybe consumers in the future will speak to their devices to search and purchase products online. And, what would that be like? Would it expend from virtual space to real spaces? Would this allow us to shop without ever leaving our car? For instance, would everything be drive-through, allowing us to speak our needs into a digital device, swipe our phone to pay for the item, then pull around to have purchases loaded into our car?</p><p>It?s an interesting thought, but what will that mean for retailers who rely on their brick and mortar stores to entice unplanned purchases and the social element inherent in a brick and mortar shopping experience? And, what will this mean for prior digital innovations, such as newcomer Shopkick and the QR codes used ubiquitously in stores?</p><h2>Digital Innovation: where we came from</h2><p>Sometimes the best way to understand where we?re going is to take a look back at where we stand. In the not-too-distant past the Internet was just for scientists and for the military. But, beginning in the 1990s you saw the emergence of the World Wide Web. The ease of web development, emergence of easy-to-use browsers, like GOOGLE (Happy 14th Birthday) and cheap internet provides such as AOL, spread usage of the internet to ever-increasing groups of users.</p><p>Then, of course, we had a number of businesses jumping into the Internet especially in the form of e-commerce, forming what all know as the infamous dot-coms. The dot-coms failed miserably by the end of the 1990s and early 2000s mainly because their business models were very flawed.</p><p>Most dot-coms did not developed an effective way of commercializing their business model. Others failed to provide value for consumers over existing offerings. An exception is Amazon.com, which not only thrived during the dot-com failure, it eventually drove out its brick-and-mortar competition.</p><h2>Digital Innovation: where we are now</h2><p>We see the same kind of thing happening today on social networks. Facebook, which quickly swept much of the known world ? gaining nearly 1 Billion users ? was introduced to the market just a few short months ago. Despite significant buzz in the financial markets, Facebook lost a lot of its luster since then and even the major private stockholders who bought Facebook before it went public are dumping much of that stock.</p><p>Several problems underpin Facebook?s problem and are inherent in digital innovations. First, the technology that enables these digital innovations creates an environment where other businesses can create competing products. So, just as many dot-coms failed because too many businesses were chasing the few dollars being spent online, social networks are all chasing the same users with too few differences that create REAL value for consumers.</p><p>Social networks are also TOO open. Where once you had friends sharing interesting posts, you now have businesses who know little about sharing in social media drowning out the voices of your friends. Recently, Twitter has almost become useless unless you seriously restrict your network, with the message to noise ratio creating negative user experiences. Many users quit Facebook with the same frustration.</p><p>And, like the dot-com digital innovation, most social networks struggle to find a means to monetize their platforms and the use of paid promotions only decreases the user experience further.</p><p>Just like Amazon before it, Google appears to have developed the magic elixir of success. Today, nearly 70% of worldwide search occurs on Google.</p><p>Google?s success comes because they never lost sight of creating user value, Google?s efforts to monetize their platform are successful without declining user experience. Google?s success comes through giving away significant value to users ? free searches for consumers and free tools for businesses.</p><h2>What this means for you</h2><p>Digital innovations occur at an increasingly fast pace. Your business models must look to the future of these digital innovations rather than past digital platforms.</p><p>You also have to learn from the mistakes of those who came before. Chipper Jones would love nothing more than to end his stellar career as a champion, and the Atlanta Braves are doing their best to help the retiring third baseman attain that goal.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">When Jones led off the bottom of the ninth inning Tuesday night with a double, his teammates were hardly surprised.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">"Chipper's last year ? it couldn't be a better story," catcher Brian McCann said. "We were all saying that he's going to do something special."</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">The switch-hitter did just that, knocking Mike Dunn's 95 mph fastball to the opposite field in right-center and stirring the excitement at Turner Field. Freddie Freeman, the next batter, followed with a two-run homer that gave the Braves a 4-3 victory over the Miami Marlins and sent Atlanta back to the playoffs.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">The wild finish began a celebration as Freeman's drive off Dunn clinched at least a National League wild-card berth ? a major turnaround for a club that squandered a big lead in the wild-card race last year with a huge September collapse.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">Jones, the longtime star who plans to retire at the end of the season, took a simple approach as he stepped into the batter's box against Dunn, a former Atlanta teammate.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">"I knew in the ninth inning what I've got to do," Jones said. "I had to split the gap perfectly."</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">Most of the announced crowd of 25,632 stood for Jones' ninth-inning at-bat. The fans roared when he pulled into second base standing up, and they cheered louder when a wild pitch by Dunn (0-3) advanced him to third.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">When Freeman's 22nd homer easily cleared the wall in center field, an entire year of frustration seemed to vanish.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">"For us to win this game right now, 2012 has come full circle," Freeman said. "It's a great moment for this team, but we've still got a long ways to go because we're not done with the division yet."</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">This year, Atlanta cruised most of the way and wrapped up a postseason spot with more than a week to spare.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">And the Braves still have a chance to catch first-place Washington in the NL East. They moved within four games of the Nationals, who lost to Philadelphia 6-3, with eight games remaining.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">Atlanta hasn't won the NL East since 2005, the last of their 14 consecutive division titles under former manager Bobby Cox.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">"We've still got a chance to win some more games and maybe something else," second-year skipper Fredi Gonzalez said. "I know it's going to be a difficult task, but we're going to keep going."</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">Craig Kimbrel (3-1) worked a scoreless ninth inning to help the Braves win their 22nd straight game started by Kris Medlen. The streak is the longest in the majors since the Yankees won 22 consecutive games started by Whitey Ford in 1950 and '53.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">Returning to the postseason helps wipe away some of last season's frustration for the Braves, who blew an 8?-game lead in the wild-card standings by going 9-18 in September. They missed the playoffs after one of the biggest collapses in baseball history.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">Four of the five NL playoff spots are secured. In addition to Atlanta, Washington, Cincinnati and San Francisco have all punched their tickets to the postseason.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">The second-place Braves have a comfortable cushion in the wild-card race, and St. Louis leads the chase for the league's second wild card.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">The Braves, who will return to the postseason for the first time since 2010, have relied on Kimbrel, an emerging Cy Young candidate, while other youngsters like Jason Heyward and Freeman have emerged as productive everyday players.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">Leadoff hitter Michael Bourn struggled in the second half, but still ranks third in the majors with 39 stolen bases.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">Medlen and Minor helped stabilize a rotation that was hurt by Brandon Beachy's season-ending injury and inconsistent performances from Tommy Hanson.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">Jones went 1 for 2 with two runs and a sacrifice fly. He is batting .296 and has 14 homers with 63 RBIs. His leadership has been unmistakable in a season that included a final All-Star appearance.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">The Braves tied it 1-all in the second when Jones walked, moved to second on Freeman's single and scored on Dan Uggla's single.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">After Martin Prado's two-out triple in the third, Marlins starter Nathan Eovaldi struck out Heyward, but Heyward tripled with one out in the sixth and scored on Jones' sacrifice fly to give the Braves a 2-1 lead.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">Eovaldi was trying to win for the first time in six starts. He allowed four hits, two runs and two walks in six innings with eight strikeouts.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">A.J. Ramos got the first two outs for Miami in the seventh before Dan Jennings struck out pinch-hitter Jeff Baker with a runner on first. It made the rounds on Facebook and Twitter: the otherwise bland website of the Japanese Ministry of Finance, more specifically the FAQ page on government bonds, has been catapulted to stardom. Not in a good way. As you flip through the MoF?s website, page after page, you will mostly see zero Facebook likes and zero tweets. Social media and the MoF ignore each other.</p> <p>But go to the FAQ page, skip down past the categories of Budget, Taxation, and Tariffs to item 4, Government bonds. Under the second group, skip past Tax questions for individuals, Miscellaneous (Is it a crime if I make a copy?), Price and yield questions, and Coupons to the infamous question 5: ?In case Japan becomes insolvent, what will happen to government bonds??</p> <p>Tweeted 1,645 times, liked on Facebook 3,733 times!</p> <p>The MoF website isn?t some blog to be ignored (at your own risk) but the official voice of the most important ministry of the most indebted country in the world, whose debt will reach 240% of GDP by the end of this fiscal year. The country borrows over 50% of every yen it spends, and it spends more every year. With no solution in sight. Other than <em>more</em> borrowing. Certainly not cutting the budget, which would be too painful. It wouldn?t be enough anyway. Even cutting the budget <em>in half</em> would leave a deficit. And the recently passed consumption tax increase? It will raise the tax from its current 5% to 8% in 2014 and to 10% in 2015, way too little to deal with the gigantic problem, and years too late. Yet it won?t kick in unless GDP grows at least 2% per year?which has practically no chance of happening.</p> <p>No, there is no longer a good solution. And everyone knows it.</p> <p>About 95% of Japan?s debt is held within Japan by government-owned institutions, the Bank of Japan, banks, companies, pension funds, and directly or indirectly by individuals. Hence the question??In case Japan becomes insolvent, what will happen to government bonds???is of primordial importance to just about all Japanese adults.</p> <p>The question and its answer weren?t decided by some underling. Each word was carefully weighed by experts in the highly hierarchical bureaucracy of the MoF. As these words were polished and examined for every nuance, they were passed up the ladder until they landed on the desk of an official at the very top who approved not only the wording, but also whether or not that question should even be on the website. How bondholders can possibly rest assured under these circumstances remains a mystery, in particular since the MoF then proceeds to tell them exactly how they will get kicked in the groin: bonds will be redeemed ?<em>responsibly</em>.?</p> <p>Not when they mature, but <em>responsibly</em>.</p> <p>Thus, we have the MoF?s official action plan for the moment when the big S hits the fan, the moment when Japan with its declining wages and shrinking working-age population can no longer save enough to mop up all the government bonds necessary to keep the government afloat [read.... Japan?s Slow-Motion Tsunami].</p> <p>A selective default. Bonds will retain their ?value,? but the government won?t redeem them when they mature. It will redeem them in bits and pieces, stretched into all eternity, as it sees fit.?You?ll die before you?ll see your money.</p> <p>This is THE answer, the official answer we?ve been looking for all along, and now we find it on the MoF website where it would have remained hidden in plain sight had not some enraged Japanese spread the word via Twitter and Facebook.</p> <p>And they filled the ether with caustic FB comments:</p> <ul><li>?LOL!?</li> <li>?Isn?t it called ?insolvent? because you can?t pay??</li> <li>?This is absolutely nothing but mocking the general public. How dare they say such gibberish!??</li> <li>?Should be a joke.?</li> <li>?Isn?t it supposed to go, ?Rest assured that the Japanese <em>people</em> will redeem the bonds responsibly???</li> <li>?Yeah, the only thing they could rely on is the people?s savings....?</li> </ul><p>When the legendary savings of the Japanese are drying up, as they?re in the process of doing, the word <em>responsibly</em> will take on a new meaning within the context of one of the greatest recent acts of governmental irresponsibility: creating that debt monster in the first place.</p> <p>Um, very fittingly, and in a broader context, read the excellent article....
