British Islamists jailed for al Qaeda suicide bomb plot

LONDON (Reuters) - Three British Islamists were jailed on Friday for planning mass suicide attacks that had the blessing of al Qaeda and which prosecutors said could have been as deadly as the 2005 London bombings.

A fourth man, their associate, was sentenced for terrorist financing.

With the help of others, the three plotters had intended to detonate eight rucksack bombs in a mass attack and possibly use timers to set off other devices in crowded places. They had also considered welding knife blades to a truck and ramming it into a crowd of people, prosecutors said.

They said that although the targets remained unidentified, the intent was to create an attack more devastating than the four suicide bombings on London's transport system on July 7, 2005 which killed 52 people on underground trains and a bus.

Irfan Naseer, Irfan Khalid and Ashik Ali were being sentenced after their conviction at London's Woolwich Crown Court in February on 12 counts of committing acts in preparation for terrorism between December 2010 and September 2011.

"MANY DEATHS PLANNED"

"Clearly nothing was going to stop you, short of intervention of the authorities," judge Richard Henriques said.

"I have no doubt you would have continued with your plan but for that intervention. Many deaths were planned by a determined team of individuals who were fully radicalized and you, Naseer, were their leader."

Naseer, who the judge said was a "skilful bomb-maker", was jailed for life and told he must serve at least 18 years in prison, the Press Association reported.

Khalid, who had boasted the planned attack would be "another 9/11", was given 23 years and will spend at least 12 behind bars before he can be released, while Ali was jailed for 20 years with a minimum of 10 in custody.

"Your plot had the blessing of al Qaeda and you intended to further the aims of al Qaeda," said Henriques.

Naseer and Khalid had spent time at training camps in Pakistan where they had learnt how to make bombs, mix poisons and fire guns. The court was told they had prepared "martyrdom videos" in anticipation of their suicide campaign.

The group tried to fund their plot by posing as street collectors for the Muslim Aid charity organization, raising 12,000 pounds ($18,500) for themselves in this way.

But they were forced to apply for tens of thousands of pounds in loans after their associate Rahin Ahmed, 26, lost more than 9,000 pounds trading on foreign currency markets.

He was given a 17-year jail term and will serve at least six years in prison after pleading guilty to collecting, investing and managing money for terrorism, and assisting others to travel to Pakistan for training in terrorism.

Naseer also sent four aspiring militants to Pakistan for training, although three had to return after just three days after a relative got wind of the real reason for their journey. All four of them pleaded guilty to engaging in conduct in preparation for terrorist acts.

john tortorella nicki minaj beez in the trap video food network f/a 18 f 18 crash virginia tenebrae the lake house

House gives final approval to end FAA furloughs

>>> in the past few hours, the house has decided to end the furlough that caused thousands of flights. it passed overwhelmingly. it allows the faa to shrift money from other accounts and bring staffing levels of air traffic controllers back to normal. the white house press secretary jay carney called the measure a quote, band-aid solution. but said president obama will sign it.

>> how is it fair or right or just that these kids on head start get their cuts, that these cuts go into effect and the defense department and it's tough luck. when a bunch of business travelers belly ache because their flights are delayed because of the furloughs, that they get one of the fastest pieces of legislation to move through washington in recent memory. why doesn't the president take a stand? you could have flown in members of congress who need flights home also. but the fact is the delays are -- they are a problem for not just business travelers and members of congress . but for many americans. and that's a real negative consequence of the sequester. your point is excellent. and we call on congress to show as much concern for others who are being harmed.

>> joining me now live, transportation reporter and white house reporter, thank you all for joining me. that is a heck of a question. that is the question on this friday that you're hearing over and over on blogs and when you talk to folks. when one group somehow escapes the sequester and then we talk about head start programs. we did a piece on families in the midwest suffering because the head start program in their state had been affected. meals on wheels. the list goes on and on. is that an appropriate answer from mr. carney to that question? that is on the minds of americans today.

>> i think what happened today is the starkest illustration of that inequity that exists, the sequester and til pact of it and how congress is responding to it. clearly you saw a lot of democrats today come out and say, i really hope congress works this hard and this fast when the head start cuts are being felt, meals on wheels, folks who are disabled are really facing the brunt. and a lot of the cuts as well with you it is not as widely felt. and it is a pretty valid criticism. i think that's been sort of the misstep from the white house 's perspective in terms of how they've handled this. the cuts have kicked in so gradually and incemetekr incrementally. the furloughs at the airports was viewed as one of the highest impact cuts floufl that that has been taken out of the equation with what congress did today, it may take away some of the impetus to deal with things more broadly as they come up.

>> politico has an article saying democrats blinked first on aviation cuts. it says while travelers may be relieved splrk democrats worry about saving the faa while letting other domestic programs suffer. it is that squeaky wheel thing. i'll bring in the gun debate. the nra even its own membership supporting background checks . the power of the press conferences that were held i guess by wayne lapierre and the pressure they were able to put on some republicans and democrats certainly, we saw that effort derailed. here we are again. 4-year-olds cannot go and write their letters and demand that their members of congress act on their benefit. but business travelers got the attention of those in your town. i call it your town now because everyone is bin laden at d.c.

>> i'm not sure it is business travelers as much as members of congress lou have to get out of town every week themselves get to get on their flights really, really quickly to get back and forth to washington . that i think probably had as much of an impact as anything else in terms of getting members to act as quickly.

>> is that the case? the transportation reporter, was it congress being inconvenienced? or was it truly air travelers ?

>> well, we heard a lot from air travelers during the week. because it added something like 1,000 delays nationwide. but i think part of what helped the political dynamic in washington was that even among conservative republicans, they were very nervous about having small air traffic control towers closed in their communities. they were hearing from their residents about flight delays. so there was great urgency to fix it on both sides of the aisle.

>> i want to play a little of what senator john mccain and bob cork he both today, their response to what happened. we should mention this was as they were boarding flights to get out of washington , d.c. let me play it.

>> i think everybody on both sides of the aisle knew that the white house was purposefully trying to inconvenience people to try to force us to a different place as it relates to spending.

>> it is a failure of congress , frankly, and the president to join together to prevent these really unnecessary hardships on the american public.

>> so again you see the airport background there. how much of a role did the airlines play in all of this?

>> the airlines had resisted these cuts strenuously. they filed a lawsuit last friday to try to stop the furloughs. that case had not been heard and i guess now becomes moot. but the airlines had resisted this. they said it would bring an important facet of the economy to a halt. so they fought it strongly.

>> the president said he will sign this bill. what do we believe will happen next?

>> we'll have to wait for the next sort of issue to pop up with sequestration. this will obviously the furloughs will be averted. but like democrats have been saying all yesterday, all day, is that these cuts are still going to go into effect. hit people pretty broadly. i think the national parks this summer may be the next sort of focal point for more widespread attention. but again, this is coming. these cuts are kicking in sort of so gradually and incrementally that it is hard to see what the next sort of big tension point is that forces congress to act short of going with this gang in the senate, the group of republicans trying to work with the white house , maybe on larger deficit deal. in many ways, the white house what they view as their best hope, dealing with this for the long term. this issue will pop back up at the end of the fiscal year. even if they're dealing with it piecemeal until then.

>> great pleasure have you gone

Smartphones overtake 'dumb' phones worldwide

NEW YORK (AP) ? Research firm IDC said more smartphones than "dumb" phones are being made this year, a milestone in a shift that's putting computing power and Internet access in millions of hands worldwide.

Manufacturers shipped 216 million smartphones worldwide in the first three months of this year, compared with 189 million regular cellphones, according to a study IDC released late Thursday. IDC said smartphones made up 51.6 percent of the 419 million mobile phones shipped.

In the U.S., smartphones overtook regular cellphones in 2011. IDC analyst Ramon Llamas said Friday that the shift to a global majority of smartphones is now being driven by consumers in developing countries such as China, India and Indonesia.

Another firm, ABI Research, found that smartphones made up 49 percent of shipments in the first quarter. Samsung Electronics Co., the world's largest phone maker, doesn't provide a breakdown of its phone shipments, and analysts vary in their estimates. Even going by ABI's numbers, it's clear that smartphones will solidly overtake the market this year.

The shift from phones primarily designed for calls, and perhaps texting, to ones with advanced operating systems and touch screens has roiled the cellphone industry. Finland's Nokia Corp. was for many years the world's largest maker of cellphones, but it has failed to translate that into success in smartphones. It's now the second-largest maker of phones overall, behind Samsung Electronics Co., but it falls far down the list of smartphone makers.

Cellphone pioneer Motorola Mobility, a U.S. company now owned by Google, has stumbled through the transition as well, while Apple Inc. has become the world's third-largest maker of cellphones, less than six years after launching the first iPhone. Samsung and Apple are the top makers of smartphones. LG Electronics Inc. of South Korea; HTC Corp. of Taiwan; and ZTE Corp. and Huawei Technologies Ltd. of China jostle for the No. 3 position.

Katy Perry lists home purchased with Russell Brand

This week in celebrity real estate, Katy Perry listed her home officially on the market, Charlize Theron sold a home that once inspired a Beatles song and singer Colbie Caillat?s home is for sale.

Katy Perry lists Hollywood Hills home for $6.925 million
Katy Perry and Russell Brand finalized their divorce in July 2012, and by most accounts have moved on with their lives ? Perry dated singer John Mayer for a while, and Brand has been spotted with model Zara Martinin London.

However, a few links to their relationship still remain; namely real estate. Not only do the two own an apartment in New York ? one they?ve had listed for several years ? but they own another residence in Hollywood Hills that Perry just listed on the open market for $6.925 million.

According to property records, Brand and Perry bought the home, located at 8159 Hollywood Boulevard, Los Angeles, Calif. 90069, for $6.5 million and reportedly never lived there. Perry has been trying to quietly sell the home without officially listing it for quite some time. Sticking it on the MLS as an official sale seems to be her final attempt to dump the property.

Besides the celebrity ownership, the three-acre estate has quite a bit going for it. Built in 1921, the home is near the Chateau Marmont and Frank Lloyd Wright?s famed Storer House. Perry?s two-story property is gated and private, with 8,835 square feet of living space, seven bedrooms and 11 baths. The property also includes two guest houses, a carriage house and the ubiquitous celebrity-style pool with waterfall.

Charlize Theron?s home?once a muse for George Harrison?sells
It?s widely known that 1567 Blue Jay Way, Los Angeles, Calif. 90069 once served as the inspiration for George Harrison?s hit ?Blue Jay Way,? but the mid-century property was also recently owned by Charlize Theron.

The South African actress just sold the property, according to a source. The buyer, represented by Gary Gold of Hilton & Hyland, paid $3.8 million for the three-bedroom.

Theron purchased the home in 2009 for $3.625 million and has had it on and off the market since 2012. Rodeo Realty held the listing, slowly dropping the price from $4.599 million to $3.999 million over 10 months.

The story goes that Harrison was sitting in the Hollywood Hills home, playing an organ, while waiting for someone to pick him up. In those few moments, inspiration struck, and his hit song was written.

Blue Jay Way has long been coveted, for more than musical inspiration. Perched above Los Angeles, it?s within the ?Bird Streets,? a residential area known to be an exclusive enclave popular with celebs. Windy, secluded with stunning views of the city lights, the area has been home to Jennifer Aniston, Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, Jodie Foster and Keanu Reeves.

Theron?s home was constructed in 1964 and measures 4,116 square feet with three bedrooms and three baths. Built in a ?U-shape,? the home has walls of glass with spectacular views of downtown, a media screening room, outdoor living spaces and a pool.

Colbie Caillat?s home, featured on MTV?s ?Cribs,? for sale
Despite her chart-topping pop hits such as ?Bubbly,? Colbie Caillat lived with her parents for quite a while during the beginning of her career and even showed off her parents? Tarzana home in an episode of MTV?s ?Cribs.?

According to TMZ and property records, Caillat?s parents have just hoisted the home, located at 6025 Calvin Ave., Tarzana, Calif. 91356, on the market for $1.399 million.

Caillat comes from a musical family; her father won a Grammy in 1977 for co-producing Fleetwood Mac?s iconic ?Rumours? album, and Caillat reportedly wrote songs for her album ?Breakthrough? at the home.

Situated behind gates and a long drive, the private residence has lush landscaping and a secluded pool with waterfall. The 3,701-square-foot home has four bedrooms, 4.5 baths and an updated kitchen with granite counters.

Citigroup beats on earnings, revenue; stock rises

NEW YORK (AP) ? Citigroup beat analysts' estimates for first-quarter earnings and revenue, and the bank's stock rose in pre-market trading. Citi's investment banking business jumped and the bank also released funds it had set aside for bad loans.

Citigroup bank made $4 billion, up 17 percent from a year ago, after stripping out the effects of an accounting charge. That amounted to $1.29 per share, beating the $1.17 that analysts polled by FactSet were expecting.

Revenue was $20.8 billion after stripping out the accounting charge, up 3 percent from a year ago. That also beat the $20.2 billion that analysts had expected.

Investment banking revenue there jumped 31 percent, the bank reported Monday, while revenue from consumer banking was flat. Citi's investment banking unit advised more companies on mergers and acquisitions and underwrote more stock and bond offerings. In the consumer bank, credit card revenue inched down.

Citi Holdings, the unit where the bank has shuttled troubled assets related to the financial crisis, lost less than in the same period a year ago. Citi Holdings lost $789 million, compared with more than $1 billion a year ago.

The bank also continued to release money it had set aside for bad loans, including releasing reserves from Citi Holdings' North American mortgage portfolio for the first time. Its total allowance for loan losses is now $23.7 billion, or 3.7 percent of total loans, compared to $29 billion, or 4.5 percent of total loans, a year ago.

Citi also benefited from a deferred tax credit. When companies have big losses, they get a break on taxes. Citigroup, which suffered big losses in 2008, was allowed to hold onto tax credits to use in the future, in years when it was profitable.

CEO Mike Corbat highlighted the bank's improving capital levels and the reduced "drag" from Citi Holdings.

It was Citi's first full quarter under Corbat, who took over last fall. Former CEO Vikram Pandit stepped down under pressure from a board that was unhappy with his efforts to turn around the bank. Corbat is now under pressure to turn around a bank that his predecessor couldn't.

Corbat called the bank's first quarter results encouraging, but he sounded more cautious about the economy than his peers at JPMorgan and Wells Fargo did when they reported earnings Friday.

"The environment remains challenging," Corbat said in a prepared statement, "and we are sure to be tested as we go through the year."

Citi's stock rose 2 percent to $45.83 in pre-market trading even while stock index futures were down.

Pilates Anywhere By Chanda Fetter - Tammy's Health Articles

Owning a Pilates and Fitness Studio, I often hear my clients offer excuses as to why they can?t seem to stick to their program.? We all tell ourselves stories that help us explain away why we haven?t gotten something done when in truth we always seem to find a way when we really want something.? So my first piece of advice would be to change your story!? Likely this is a pattern that follows you beyond exercise, you must stop making excuses and take the small steps needed to improve the quality of your life, you deserve it!

The following three exercises can easily be done at home, in a hotel room or even in an office break room!? They will give you a boost of energy, reduce your back pain and tighten your tummy.? As always, consult your physician before beginning exercise.

Forced Exhalation Breathing ? Sit up tall in your chair or lie down on the floor.? Place your hands between your ribcage and your belly button.? Take a long deep inhale through your nose, then exhale through pursed lips, pulling your abdominals in towards your spine while contracting your Pelvic Floor Muscles (otherwise known as Kegel or bladder muscles).? When performing the exhale you should make a ?shhh-ing? sound to ensure the pressure is great enough to create the contraction needed.? Do this a minimum of 10 times then use this breath when performing the remaining exercises.? This generous flow of oxygen will do wonders for your brain as well as your abdominals.? Each time you perform this breath you will be engaging 80% of your abdominal wall!

Hundreds ? Lie on your back with your legs in one of the following positions ? knees bent / feet on floor making sure your lower back is in neutral position, knees bent with feet off floor / table top, or legs extended away from body on a 45 degree angle so as to stress the lower abdominal section.? Reach your arms long down the side of your body, bring your head and shoulders into a tight curl and pump your arms up and down so as to engage your back muscles, ie Latissimus Dorsi.? Using the forced exhale technique above, inhale for 5 pumps, exhale for 5 pumps and do for a count of 100. The curl is a constant, high hold.

Swimming ? Lie on your stomach with your arm and legs stretched out like Superman/woman.? Extend long through your spine as you lift your arms and legs off the floor.? Be careful not to arch extensively into your spine but rather lengthen out of it.? Using the forced exhalation technique above flutter your arms and legs up and down for total of 10 breaths.

Poland unveils giant statue of John Paul II

CZESTOCHOWA, Poland (AP) ? A giant statue of the late Pope John Paul II billed as the world's tallest has been unveiled in southern Poland.

Archbishop Waclaw Depo unveiled the statue of the Polish pontiff Saturday in the southern city of Czestochowa, the home of this predominantly Catholic nation's most famous pilgrimage site, the Jasna Gora monastery.

The white fiberglass figure rises about five stories, or nearly 14 meters (more than 45 feet), on a hill overlooking the city.

It was funded by a businessman, Leszek Lyson, in gratitude for what he believes was an intervention by the late pontiff in saving his drowning son.

John Paul, who led the Roman Catholic church for 27 years before dying in 2005, remains a respected figure in his homeland.

Lion Air jet crashes into sea in Bali; 45 hurt

BALI, Indonesia (AP) ? All 108 passengers and crew survived after a new Lion Air jet crashed into the ocean and snapped into two while attempting to land Saturday on the Indonesian resort island of Bali, injuring up to 45 people.

The injured were taken to several different hospitals for treatment, but there appeared to be no serious injuries, said airport spokesman Alfasyah, who like many Indonesians uses only one name. There were three foreigners on board ? two Singaporeans and a French national ? all of whom suffered slight injuries.

TV footage showed police and rescuers using rubber boats to evacuate the 101 passengers and seven crew members. The Boeing 737 could be seen sitting in the shallow water with a large crack in its fuselage.

Officials initially said the plane overshot the runway before hitting the water, but a spokesman for Lion Air, a low-cost carrier, said at a news conference that the plane crashed about 50 meters (164 feet) ahead of the runway. The weather was cloudy with rain at the time of the incident.

"It apparently failed to reach the runway and fell into the sea," said the spokesman, Edward Sirait.

He said the Boeing 737-800 Next Generation plane was received by the airline last month and was declared airworthy. The plane originated in Bandung, the capital of West Java province, and had landed in two other cities on Saturday prior to the crash.

"We are not in a capacity to announce the cause of the crash," Sirait said, adding that the National Safety Transportation Committee was investigating.

Those on board recalled being terrified as the plane slammed into the water Saturday afternoon.

"The aircraft was in landing position when suddenly I saw it getting closer to the sea, and finally it hit the water," Dewi, a passenger who sustained head wounds in the crash and uses one name, told The Associated Press.

"All of the passengers were screaming in panic in fear they would drown. I left behind my belongings and went to an emergency door," she said. "I got out of the plane and swam before rescuers jumped in to help me."

Rapidly expanding Lion Air is Indonesia's top discount carrier, holding about a 50 percent market share in the country, a sprawling archipelago of 240 million people that's seeing a boom in both economic growth and air travel. The airline has been involved in six accidents since 2002, four of them involving Boeing 737s and one resulting in 25 deaths, according to the Aviation Safety Network's website.

Lion Air is currently banned from flying to Europe due to broader safety lapses in the Indonesian airline industry that have long plagued the country. Last year, a Sukhoi Superjet-100 slammed into a volcano during a demonstration flight, killing all 45 people on board.

Indonesia is one of Asia's most rapidly expanding airline markets, but is struggling to provide qualified pilots, mechanics, air traffic controllers and updated airport technology to ensure safety.

Lion Air, which started flying in 2000, signed a $24 billion deal last month to buy 234 Airbus planes, the biggest order ever for the French aircraft maker. It also gave Boeing its largest-ever order when it finalized a deal for 230 planes last year. The planes will be delivered from 2014 to 2026.

The Best Way to Reheat Steaks Without Drying Them Out

The Best Way to Reheat Steaks Without Drying Them OutThe Best Way to Reheat Steaks Without Drying Them Out Knowing how to cook a perfect steak in the first place is a worthwhile skill to have, but if you have leftovers and want to reheat them without making them all dried out and gross, this method from America's Test Kitchen is perfect.

Essentially, the trick for reheating cooked steak without losing moisture or that flavorful crust is to duplicate the cooking method that got it to where it was in the first place. Start it off slow in the oven, then sear it in a pan, the way the video above describes. I've been known to use this cooking method and the reverse (searing first and then finishing in the oven) when making steaks, but I'll admit this technique probably works to retain moisture in already-cooked steaks better.

While "leftover steak" isn't exactly a problem I think most people are likely to have, it is a great way to properly reheat leftovers from a restaurant or a big backyard grilling session.

Why is the Mafia investing in renewable energy?

The renewable energy industry is apparently becoming a favorite playground for the underworld, Alic writes.?Lucrative government subsidies for the construction of wind farms and a fairly lax regulatory system have made renewable energy attractive to the Mafia.

The all-day conference takes place at the Drumossie Hotel, Inverness on April 18.

Latifi?s future, a new Couture and more: Six questions that will be answered by UFC on Fuel 9

UFC on Fuel 9's main card kicks off at 2 p.m. ET on Saturday. What questions will be answered by these fights in Sweden?

Who the heck is Ilir Latifi, anyway? When the Swedish MMA Federation stopped Alexander Gustafsson from fighting because of a cut, the UFC needed a quick replacement for the main event. Latifi, Gustafsson's training partner, stepped up, but we don't know much about him except that he's on a three-fight win streak. Will he take advantage of the opportunity?

Where does Gegard Mousasi rank in the UFC's stocked light heavyweight division? Mousasi has made a name for himself fighting in Strikeforce, Dream and Pride, but this is the first time UFC fans will get a look at him. Fighting against Latifi, a late replacement, Mousasi could show he is the dominant fighter he once was.

Will Matt Mitrione end his losing streak? It's been a rough go for the football-player-turned-fighter. After starting his career with five straight wins, Mitrione lost his last two. Can a bout with Philip de Fries, who is 1-2 in his last three fights, give Mitrione a chance to right the ship?

Can Ryan Couture step out from the shadow of his famous father? After spending all of his pro career in Strikeforce, Couture will finally fight in the UFC, where his father became a legend. He will also have to ignore the ongoing dispute between UFC president Dana White and his father. Will he be able to win over Ross Pearson and start his own legend?

Will UFC fans still tune in after the main event was changed so close to the fights? This is a tough one. Gustafsson was fighting for a possible title shot. Now, he's off the card, and the rest of it is filled with Strikeforce fighters making their UFC debut and "The Ultimate Fighter" castmembers. Will it be enough for fans to spend their Saturday afternoon watching the fights?

Is Papy Abedi the best name in the UFC? Yes. Yes, it is.
