Satellite Conversation ? The Transponder System Element V

Commercial companies like Christie, Aerospatiale, and Lockheed Martin happen to be designing satellite to continuously keep up with the developing demand for satellite tv phones, Televisions and data services Satellite phone sales. These firms have achieved this on the expense of greater spacecraft size as well as power. This particular expense is specially true with regard to geostationary orbiting satellite, which demands larger transmission power as well as high gain dish aerial diameters, to overcome the actual tremendous indication loss, during its course through the Thirty-five,000 kilometres from Globe to the satellite tv and vice-versa.

In the first place, satellites styles are at initial cocenptualised, which provides a definite planning with regards to, the purpose of the actual satellite and to examine the actual systems necessary to complete the mission. Below next will be the preliminary layout and standard design stages. During the preliminary stage, a model is constructed for trials to test when the new technologies integrated in the satellite tv can be realised during this standard design point. An architectural model is created after this, as well as intense tests of all the parameters is made in-order to ascertain the design stability.

There are a number of shapes that satellites are usually constructed. You will find the Spherical ones, round shapes, package shapes, and the multi-mission module program, where the two parts, the actual bus and the vision equipment, are usually divided into lower and upper sections. The bus system bears many sub-systems, such as, the telemetry checking and demand system, the actual electrical power program, attitude management system, propulsion system, constitutionnel system as well as thermal management system. Your shapes from a satellite are usually decided on the foundation of the size and the bodyweight carried through the satellite.

Throughout discussing the working of a satellite tv, relating to send/receive of data from the Globe station for the satellite as well as vice-versa, we had, in the previous artcles, looked at the essential principle in the antenna program deployed such applications. There is another area in a satellite tv, which provides the same functional part of this send/receive process. This particular component is known as a transponder.

The Transponder

The term Transponder, which is the short form of Transmitter-responder and often abbreviated in order to XPDR, XPNDR or TPDR, is situated in telecommunication applications. This is a device that receives signals in the Earth train station, amplifies it and delivers them with regard to processing. Your processed information is re-transmitted by the transponder time for the Earth train station, in a different frequency in addition to that of the received one. While discussed during the past articles, the separation within frequencies relating to the received and the transmitted alerts are managed in-order to provide ample margins for a possible disturbance. A Transponder is also used for transmitting reply messages in response of the electronic interrogation.

Transponders include the individual communication channels of your satellite, each being a transreceiver or even a repeater. With digital camera signaling, several video and audio channels might be multiplexed and compressed and made to visit through a one transponder on a single wide band provider.
We have discussed the matter with regards to frequency artists in one of the previous articles. We?ve also explained what is meant by ?frequency?, which can be measured within Hertz (Hz).

Your communication alerts are radio stations waves carried by what is actually termed as the ?carrier frequency?. In order to look at what a provider frequency is actually ? the technique of what sort of carrier regularity is officially utilised within communication has to be briefly discussed.

Basically, you can find four varieties of techniques in which signals are usually transmitted and the are ? amplitude modulated (Feel) signals, regularity modulated (FM) signals, or phase modulated (Evening) signals. This is briefly discussed below.

Why don?t we suppose that the actual signal, as illustrated within Figure (One), needs to us transmitted utilizing Amplitude Modulation (Feel) technique. In cases like this a provider signal is actually generated. Any carrier regularity is a continual frequency that carries the actual generated indication. The process is revealed in Amount (1). Right here, the indication generated is actually modulating the plethora of the provider signal this also is the indication which is transmitted.

In case of Frequency Modulation (FM), the provider frequency is actually modulated by the regularity of the indication being transmitted., unlike Feel. You will notice a variation in the regularity of the provider signal compared to the regularity of the indication to be transmitted. Figure (2) illustrates the actual example satellite phone plans.

As for Phase Modulation, the data signal is actually transmitted through the instantaneous variance of the period of the provider signal through the signal to be transmitted. This particular principle just isn?t very much employed, unlike the most popular counterpart, frequency modulation (FM). It is because of the reason, that it has a tendency to require more technical receiving equipment and there could be ambiguity problems with determining no matter whether, for example, the actual signal provides 0? phase or 180? phase. Amount (3) demonstrates an example.

Transponders are usually transmitters and responders of satellites. The position of a transponder would be to receive the indication from the world station, that gets modulated, made worse and re-transmitted just as one up-linked signal. Your Transponder is a part of the payload of a telecom satellite high could be 20 to 30 of them in such a satellite. Your carrier alerts, discussed above, are received by the transponders in very low energy, owing to the distance that it must travel in the respective Globe stations for the satellite, positioned about Thirty-five,000 a long way above Globe. These alerts need to be made worse to a good extent and then re-transmitted to the selected Earth channels. It has a pair of high energy amplifiers, where each of these built-in amplifiers works on different frequencies.

The mixture of the devices, which broadcast and obtain, along-with the amp system, is known as the Transponder. This particular equipment contains the high energy amplifier as well as electronic filters at the enter and creation of the built-in amplifiers.. These filtration devices filtration the provider frequencies in the ones achieving the transponder as well as isolates those created for processing through the other transponders. It?s the central element in a satellite tv which preserves end-to-end link relating to the Earth channels and the satellite tv.

In such communication scenario, the actual up-link from the Globe stations for the satellite have their own contribution within distorted alerts reaching the actual satellite as will the actual down-link have, while transmitting alerts from the satellite tv to the Globe stations. Some of these distortions usually are not co-related. In order to proper these distortions, the individual benefits must be identified. The process of up-link as well as down-link signal training is quite intricate and is quickly discussed right here. In order to understand why simplified demonstration, there are certain terms which must be explained.

Modulator ? Figures (One), (2) as well as (3) symbolizes the various approaches signal transmission. The numbers represent the carrier indication, the communication signal not only that the modulated provider signal. Your carrier indication is modulated through the communication indication or the indication which has to be transmitted. This is accomplished by an electronics program called ?Modulator?. In the context of this debate, it is ample to understand that this communication indication modulates the provider signal and then this blend signal is actually processed with regard to transmission.

De-modulator ? As the blend modulated signal gets transmitted, it is received inside same manner as it has been transmitted. We ignore right here any distortion or electric powered noise which has got from the signal in its course either to the actual satellite or the Earth train station. Now, because it reaches the actual receiver, the actual embedded communication signal has to be recovered in the composite or modulated carrier indication received. The operation of singling out this specific real communication signal in the one received is done by way of a De-modulator, which is just opposite as to what the modulator really does.

Multiplexers ? The price tag on implementing many channels of every data source is not only very high but in addition an inconvenience. Damaged whipped cream this is a Multiplexer, that combines many incoming alerts and developed one productivity, synchronised in such a manner that a particular enter signal can be acquired at the productivity at a offered synchronised moment. This would imply that a multiplexer merges the inbound channels straight into one funnel. Multiplexers can be of two types ? analog and digital.

De-multiplexer ? At the productivity end in the multiplexer, where a one channel consists of the several inbound signals, the De-multiplexer, splits the data supply into the unique multiple alerts, performing an exact opposite job of a multiplexer. An easy diagram of your multiplexer is highlighted in Amount (4).

Information Compression ? Data Compression setting is the process of encoding electric information utilizing fewer binary numbers or other info bearing products. The volume of information in that information is greatly reduced compared to the un-coded representation. Typically, as in true of any communication technology, data compression only works once the receiving train station understands this encoding and consequently is able to decode the actual incoming indication.

Let us now consider a circumstance, where a selected Earth train station is transmitting information for the satellite. Keeping that in mind, the satellite tv re-transmits the indication to another world station where the signal, where it is selected. The indication being transmitted goes through a lot of procedure to reach the actual satellite and also a similar procedure is adopted to transmit the actual signal for the designated Globe station through the satellite. An easy diagram is actually presented within Figure (Your five).

LNA ? LNA is short for Low Noises amplifier. This is a special form of amplifier getting application within communication programs. It is positioned quite near the antenna. Utilizing a LNA, the noise is substantially reduced through the gain in the amplifier, as the electrical noise from the amp itself is injected into the indication being prepared. Very the bottomline is, the ?gain? of the amplifier is actually its ability to boost the magnitude of the input indication.

Figure (Your five)
Satellite Transponder Communication
Technique

So that you can understand the working of the transmitter as well as receiver software, reference was created to the above, where the typical terms have been quickly explained.

Digital input indication goes through ?Compression? of digital data which is ?Multiplexed? and then ?Modulated?. The modulated indication goes through the actual ?Up-converter? and a ?Filter? and the pure digital camera information indication is then consequently amplified by the high energy amplifier ?HPA? as well as transmitted for the satellite. Your signal has to be adequately made worse in order to travel about Thirty-five,000 a long way above the Globe and achieve the transponders of the satellite tv system.

Your signal achieving the satellite tv has by then become poor and is made worse through a low noise amp (LNA) down-converted through a ?Down-converter?. Your signal goes thru filtration of unwanted electric powered noises as well as passes by way of a ?Limiter?. A limiter offers some kind of a enterprise that specifies the level of the actual signal that is certainly desirable. Any limiter is a enterprise that allows alerts below a group value to pass through unaffected. Your signal taken from the limiter might be amplified by ?A? again as being a preparation to deliver it time for the selected Earth train station, It is once again filtered getting rid of any electric powered noise that this signal might have inherited through processing. This is then presented to the actual transponder dish to be re-transmitted back to the actual designated Globe Station.

Throughout receiving the indication, it goes by way of a so called complete opposite processing. Your signal achieving the train station is poor and is passed through a low noise amp (LNA) and down-converted, demodulated and then decompressed. The productivity being the actual pure re-transmitted digital camera signal might be received through the ground train station.

A transponder is therefore is a high speed radio frequency funnel and has software in amplifying one or more provider signals which enable it to deliver data rates inside range of 50 to One humdred and fifty Mbps. Consideration to the layout aspects of these kind of transponders are required within achieving extremely high data costs

What is Worth Investing? ? Arkham City

What is Value Investing?

Different sources define value investing differently. Some say value investing is the investment philosophy that favors the purchase of stocks that are at the moment promoting at low value-to-guide ratios and have large dividend yields. Others say value investing is all about getting stocks with low P/E ratios. You will even occasionally listen to that value investing has a lot more to do with the balance sheet than the income statement.

In his 1992 letter to Berkshire Hathaway shareholders, Warren Buffet wrote:

We think the very expression ?value investing? is redundant. What is ?investing? if it is not the act of looking for value at least enough to justify the amount compensated? Consciously paying out a lot more for a stock than its calculated value ? in the wish that it can soon be offered for a even now-increased value ? should be labeled speculation which is neither illegal, immoral nor ? in our watch ? economically fattening.

No matter whether acceptable or not, the expression ?value investing? is extensively used. Usually, it connotes the purchase of stocks possessing attributes such as a low ratio of value to guide value, a low value-earnings ratio, or a large dividend yield. Regrettably, such characteristics, even if they appear in blend, are much from determinative as to whether an investor is in fact getting one thing for what it is value and is as a result truly working on the principle of getting value in his investments. Correspondingly, opposite characteristics ? a large ratio of value to guide value, a large value-earnings ratio, and a low dividend yield ? are in no way inconsistent with a ?value? purchase.

Buffetts definition of ?investing? is the best definition of value investing there is. Value investing is acquiring a stock for less than its calculated value.

Tenets of Value Investing

1 Every single share of stock is an ownership interest in the underlying company. A stock is not basically a piece of paper that can be offered at a increased value on some future date. Stocks symbolize a lot more than just the appropriate to obtain future funds distributions from the company. Economically, every share is an undivided interest in all corporate assets equally tangible and intangible ? and ought to be valued as such.

two A stock has an intrinsic value. A stocks intrinsic value is derived from the economic value of the underlying company.

3 The stock marketplace is inefficient. Value investors do not subscribe to the Successful Market place Hypothesis. They believe shares frequently trade fingers at charges over or below their intrinsic values. Sometimes, the difference amongst the marketplace value of a share and the intrinsic value of that share is extensive enough to permit rewarding investments. Benjamin Graham, the father of value investing, explained the stock markets inefficiency by using a metaphor. His Mr. Market place metaphor is even now referenced by value investors nowadays:

Imagine that in some personal company you own a little share that expense you $1,000. One particular of your partners, named Mr. Market place, is very obliging in fact. Every single day he tells you what he thinks your interest is value and additionally offers both to purchase you out or market you an additional interest on that foundation. At times his thought of value seems plausible and justified by company developments and prospects as you know them. Often, on the other hand, Mr. Market place lets his enthusiasm or his fears run away with him, and the value he proposes seems to you a minor quick of silly.

4 Investing is most intelligent when it is most businesslike. This is a quote from Benjamin Grahams ?The Intelligent Investor?. Warren Buffett believes it is the single most important investing lesson he was at any time taught. Investors ought to deal with investing with the seriousness and studiousness they deal with their picked occupation. An investor should deal with the shares he buys and sells as a shopkeeper would deal with the merchandise he specials in. He need to not make commitments exactly where his expertise of the ?merchandise? is insufficient. Moreover, he need to not engage in any investment operation unless of course ?a reliable calculation exhibits that it has a fair likelihood to yield a sensible profit?.

five A genuine investment demands a margin of basic safety. A margin of basic safety may possibly be furnished by a firms operating funds placement, past earnings efficiency, land assets, economic goodwill, or most typically a blend of some or all of the over. The margin of basic safety is manifested in the difference amongst the quoted value and the intrinsic value of the company. It absorbs all the injury induced by the investors unavoidable miscalculations. For this cause, the margin of basic safety need to be as extensive as we humans are stupid which is to say it ought to be a veritable chasm. Acquiring dollar expenses for ninety-five cents only performs if you know what youre performing getting dollar expenses for forty-five cents is probable to show rewarding even for mere mortals like us.

What Value Investing Is Not

Value investing is acquiring a stock for less than its calculated value. Astonishingly, this simple fact alone separates value investing from most other investment philosophies.

Accurate extended-expression progress investors such as Phil Fisher target exclusively on the value of the company. They do not problem on their own with the value compensated, due to the fact they only wish to purchase shares in corporations that are truly extraordinary. They believe that the phenomenal progress such corporations will experience above a wonderful many a long time will allow them to benefit from the wonders of compounding. If the business value compounds quickly enough, and the stock is held extended enough, even a seemingly lofty value will sooner or later be justified.

Some so-referred to as value investors do consider relative charges. They make decisions based on how the marketplace is valuing other public companies in the very same market and how the marketplace is valuing every dollar of earnings current in all corporations. In other words, they may possibly select to purchase a stock basically due to the fact it seems low-cost relative to its peers, or due to the fact it is buying and selling at a decrease P/E ratio than the standard marketplace, even however the P/E ratio may possibly not appear specifically low in absolute or historical terms.

Should such an approach be referred to as value investing? I dont think so. It may possibly be a perfectly legitimate investment philosophy, but it is a different investment philosophy.

Value investing demands the calculation of an intrinsic value that is independent of the marketplace value. Strategies that are supported exclusively or primarily on an empirical foundation are not component of value investing. The tenets set out by Graham and expanded by others such as Warren Buffett form the basis of a logical edifice.

Although there may possibly be empirical assistance for techniques within value investing, Graham founded a college of assumed that is highly logical. Right reasoning is stressed above verifiable hypotheses and causal relationships are stressed above correlative relationships. Value investing may possibly be quantitative but, it is arithmetically quantitative.

There is a clear and pervasive distinction amongst quantitative fields of examine that make use of calculus and quantitative fields of examine that stay purely arithmetical. Value investing treats security analysis as a purely arithmetical subject of examine. Graham and Buffett had been equally known for possessing more powerful normal mathematical capabilities than most security analysts, and yet equally guys stated that the use of increased math in security analysis was a error. Accurate value investing demands no a lot more than standard math capabilities.

Contrarian investing is occasionally assumed of as a value investing sect. In practice, individuals who contact on their own value investors and individuals who contact on their own contrarian investors have a tendency to purchase very equivalent stocks.

Let us consider the circumstance of David Dreman, writer of ?The Contrarian Investor?. David Dreman is known as a contrarian investor. In his circumstance, it is an acceptable label, due to the fact of his keen interest in behavioral finance. Even so, in most circumstances, the line separating the value investor from the contrarian investor is fuzzy at best. Dremans contrarian investing techniques are derived from three measures: value to earnings, value to funds movement, and value to guide value. These very same measures are closely associated with value investing and specially so-referred to as Graham and Dodd investing a form of value investing named for Benjamin Graham and David Dodd, the co-authors of ?Security Analysis?.

Conclusions

Eventually, value investing can only be defined as paying out less for a stock than its calculated value, exactly where the method used to calculate the value of the stock is truly independent of the stock marketplace. In which the intrinsic value is calculated utilizing an analysis of discounted future funds flows or of asset values, the resulting intrinsic value estimate is independent of the stock marketplace. But, a strategy that is based on basically getting stocks that trade at low value-to-earnings, value-to-guide, and value-to-funds movement multiples relative to other stocks is not value investing. Of program, these very techniques have established quite successful in the past, and will probable proceed to work well in the future.

The magic system devised by Joel Greenblatt is an example of one such successful approach that will often result in portfolios that resemble individuals built by genuine value investors. Even so, Joel Greenblatts magic system does not attempt to calculate the value of the stocks purchased. So, whilst the magic system may possibly be successful, it isnt genuine value investing. Joel Greenblatt is himself a value investor, due to the fact he does calculate the intrinsic value of the stocks he buys. Greenblatt wrote The Tiny Guide That Beats The Market place for an audience of investors that lacked both the potential or the inclination to value corporations.

You can not be a value investor unless of course you are willing to calculate company values. To be a value investor, you dont have to value the company precisely ? but, you do have to value the company.

(AP) ? Nine more phone hacking lawsuits against Rupert Murdoch's News International have been settled, including a case brought by comedian Steve Coogan, his lawyer told Britain's High Court on Wednesday.

That brings to more than 60 the number of claims that Murdoch's UK newspaper company has dealt with in the scandal that has already brought down a 168-year-old tabloid and threatened Murdoch's global media empire.

But Murdoch's company still faces a host of other lawsuits linked to journalists obtaining scoops using illegal means. Hugh Tomlinson, the lawyer for the victims, said six more new lawsuits had been filed and 50 other cases are being prepared.

The cases settled recently include Coogan, who received a settlement of 40,000 pounds ($63,500) and soccer star Paul Gascoigne, who received 68,000 pounds ($108,000).

Simon Hughes, deputy leader of the Liberal Democrat party, received 45,000 pounds ($71,500) and said in a statement that everyone who allowed a large company to behave illegally must be brought to account.

Lawmaker George Galloway received 25,000 pounds ($39,700) and News International lawyer Michael Silverleaf admitted the company had intercepted five of Galloway's voicemails around the time of the 2003 Iraq war.

Sally King, a friend of former Home Secretary David Blunkett, received 60,000 pounds ($95,300) while her husband Andrew received 50,000 pounds ($79,400). Her father and brother also received substantial damages.

Sports agent Sky Andrew also received 75,000 pounds.

Silverleaf said in court that News International had accepted responsibility and regretted the damage it had caused.

The only outstanding case from the first set of phone hacking claims was brought by singer Charlotte Church, who has testified that Murdoch's reporters grossly violated her privacy and that of her family, causing great distress.

The scandal over phone hacking at the News of the World tabloid boiled over after it emerged last summer that journalists at the paper had routinely hacked into the phones of celebrities, politicians, sports figures and even crime victims.

The now-defunct tabloid has already settled with several prominent figures, including actress Sienna Miller and the family of murdered British schoolgirl Milly Dowler, whose phone was broken into by the paper soon after her disappearance in 2002.

Pest Control Mesa - An Increase in Pest Control Services Keeps ...

Pest control services in Mesa are increasing in popularity due to the large number of pests that are being found in homes. Another issue that can contribute to the rise in pest problems is the amount of vacant homes that are sitting due to foreclosure. Vacant homes are a breeding ground for unwanted pests. After a new owner takes over, they have to get the pests treated by a professional to get rid of the problem. Pests that invade vacant homes also spread to neighboring residences.

Contributing Factors

The warm climate year round also contributes to the need for pest control services in Mesa. In Arizona, pests are a year round problem. These pests can spread disease and harm plants that are in your garden. They are also a big problem for local farmers and can threaten their crops if left untreated. Pest control companies in Mesa provide homeowners with different pest control options to maintain a safe and healthy home.

It is important to remember that not every home owner or business has the same types of pests to deal with. One of the major problems in Arizona is termites. This is due to a hot, dry climate that the termites love. Most homes in Arizona have had, or will eventually have termites. This is expected by most homeowners, and knowing what signs to look for is important.

Mesa pest control companies should take the time to identify each homeowner's unique situation and develop a customized treatment plan. The pest control company that you choose should also be up to date on the latest pest control methods and employee training. Each company should also be able to educate consumers on the various types of pest treatment options as well as explain what he or she did to treat your property.

The Journey Must Go on | David Mansaray

Road Ahead

If you tried to visit this blog sometime in? the last few weeks you would have seen a screen that? read? ?I?ll be back?.? I also deactivated my account on Facebook, and (temporarily) took all of my videos off of YouTube.? I didn?t give a heads up, just like that, I disappeared from the web.

Why Did I do This?

At the ending of last year I took some time to review all my writing and videos on the web.? I realised something which at first was shocking: much of my writing and videos no longer represent the person I am.

Last year I travelled extremely far on my journey of growth and I?m happy with the ground? I covered.? However,? when I reviewed my videos and writing I felt uneasy with having an older version of myself floating around.

If you ever meet me in person, no? matter when,? you?ll be meeting the latest version of myself; there?s no way of meeting the old me because that version is always deleted.

However, thing work differently on the net?

The Internet Freezes Time

We all have this big brother Google who knows where everything is on the net; whenever we want to find something, we ask, and he tells us where to go.

The majority of people find me through Google, and It?s probably how you found me, right?

I?m fortunate to live in an age where people can? find my work by typing a few words. All I have to do is continue to add value to this huge database.

The alarm bells started to ring in my head when I realised Google was sending a lot of people to my old work, which was created by a now extinct version of myself.? This troubled me and I started thinking of ways to handle the situation.

I figured I had been publishing content for the web for one year and it was probably ok if I started again.

The idea seemed promising;? I would delete my whole archive of content and start again from a blank slate. I went over the idea a million times and decided to shut my blog for a few weeks to reflect.

Everything Must Stay

I learnt last year that Ideas often aren?t as good they first seem.

I?m happy I didn?t make a rash decision because spending a few short weeks away was enough to realise it was a bad idea. I?ve changed in many ways but my mission is still the same:

To inspire people to live better lives through my action, writing and speaking; to help people become the best version of themselves by demonstrating ?the power of constantly exploring and learning.

Writing and speaking? can be extremely powerful, however, I find these mediums most moving when they are grounded in experience;? with this in mind, I realised? a more effective way to achieve my mission is to keep all my cards on the table, to show my trials and tribulations and to leave a trail that goes back to the very beginning.

HBT: Why not have Strasburg make debut June 1?

The idea already made plenty of sense. Now it seems like the obvious choice with Edwin Jackson?getting inserted into Washington?s rotation.

Adding Jackson to a rotation that already included Stephen Strasburg, Gio Gonzalez, Jordan Zimmermann and?John Lannan gives the Nationals seven viable starters, with Chien-Ming Wang and Ross Detwiler currently in reserve (Tom Gorzelanny could also be included in that mix, but the Nationals view him strictly as a reliever now). The big issue, though, is that the best of those starters, is only expected to throw about 160 innings this season after missing most of 2011 following Tommy John surgery.

So, if Strasburg starts the first week of the season and doesn?t miss any time, he?s probably going to run out of innings in mid-August. Which isn?t so bad if the Nationals are content to win 70 games this year. However, after adding Jackson and Gonzalez, the Nationals can at least dream of the wild card. The offense will need bounce-back seasons from Ryan Zimmerman and Jayson Werth, but the cause is?hardly hopeless.

Which means the Nationals should just scratch Strasburg from spring training. Instead of having him start to gear up in mid-February, have him do it in mid-April instead. Such a plan would keep him available for the entire month of September and then into October, on the off chance the Nationals make it. They?ll certainly be willing to stretch that innings limit a bit if they get to the postseason.

And, yeah, I know a win in April is just as valuable as a win in September? such a strategy wouldn?t necessarily improve the Nationals? record. But then again, it might. The Nationals? other six starters are a whole lot more likely to all be healthy on April 1 than on September 1. Given their light workloads of late, Zimmermann and Wang in particular are candidates to wear down as the season goes on. A start that doesn?t go to Strasburg in April will go to Wang or Detwiler instead. A start that doesn?t go to Strasburg in September might instead go to Yunesky Maya or Craig Stammen.

There is one big con to my plan: what to do about Strasburg?s roster status during the two months he?s off. Strasburg has options left, so the Nationals have the ability to send him down to the minors. If they tried doing so, though, agent Scott Boras would likely pitch a fit and file a grievance since Strasburg would lose a couple of months of service time. It?d be better just to put him on the disabled list, allowing Strasburg to continue to accrue his service time. MLB doesn?t have such a provision for putting a healthy player on the DL, but since it can be argued that Strasburg is still completing his rehab from Tommy John surgery, maybe this one could slide.

?The Woman in Black? Stage-to-Screen Review: Fear and Loathing ...

EDITOR?S NOTE: Long-time Raleigh Little Theatre artistic director Haskell Fitz-Simons directed a spine-tingling stage production of The Woman in Black last October in the Cantey V. Sutton Theatre at RLT, so he is intimately familiar with the story and the special effects that might be employed to keep audiences jumping. This critique of The Woman in Black, written at our request, is the first of a series of Stage-to-Screen Reviews that Triangle Theater Review will publish from time to time. ? R.W.M.

Since Susan Hill?s popular supernatural novel was published in 1983, The Woman in Black has seen a number of successful adaptations. In 1987, Stephen Mallatratt adapted into an immensely popular stage play, which is is still running in London?s West End, making it the second-longest-running stage play in that city (after The Mousetrap by Dame Agatha Christie). Since then, there has been a 1989 made-for-TV adaptation of The Woman in Black by Britain?s ITV Network and two BBC radio-play adaptations (in 1993 and 2004). So, the current Hammer Films release of The Woman in Black, starring a post-adolescent Daniel Radcliffe, is the second cinematic retelling of Ms. Hill?s thrillingly spooky novel.

Sometimes a ghost story can serve as an insightful study in psychological terror. Sometimes a ghost story is just a ghost story. Whichever. One of the reasons that the filmed ghost story is so popular is that a successful example completely captures its audience?s attention, and takes them along a well-structured path of rising tensions, leading to a series of horrific incidents that may raise the hair on the back of their necks and, ultimately, it may make them jump out of their seats and even, perhaps, give voice to a spontaneous little shriek of horror.

The audience at last Tuesday?s free sneak preview of The Woman in Black was a very willing participant in this well-realized exercise in tension and release. This screen adaptation, directed by James Watkins, begins sluggishly (expositions can be tiresome, no?), but soon had this audience squirming and gasping delightedly in their seats.

The cinematic story is told in the manner of a Victorian mystery, centering around an earnest young lawyer, Mr. Arthur Kipps, played by Radcliffe. A widower with a small son, Kipps is sent, reluctantly, from London to straighten out the tangled affairs of a certain Mrs. Drablow. His journey takes him to the coast of England?s remote northeast. This is a land rife with unpredictable tides and fogs and dangerous marshes and bogs, plus intractable villagers who seem intent on driving the hapless Mr. Kipps away. There is, of course, an isolated, ramshackle mansion (?Eel Marsh House?); and (dare I say it?) a mysterious Woman in Black.

As Mr. Kipps labors at his herculean task, he gradually uncovers puzzling details surrounding the deceased Mrs. Drablow and her unhappy family. Along the way, he is subjected to some rather grim ghostly manifestations of a possibly dangerous nature. That?s really all you need to know.

Daniel Radcliffe (looking more-and-more like a younger, slighter Jake Gyllenhaal) portrays the increasingly distressed Arthur Kipps. Mr. Radcliffe?s apprenticeship in the popular Harry Potter franchise has stood him in very good stead, and he manages the pivotal role with skill and finesse (though occasionally the audience might wish that his famous blue eyes were more expressive of the horrific circumstances).

Radcliffe is joined by the very versatile character actor Ciar?n Hinds and the wonderful Janet McTeer, as Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Daly, the only people in this isolated community willing to extend a welcoming hand to the young stranger. The rest of the cast, though unfamiliar to me, is drawn from the seemingly endless supply of talented British character actors, and a very interesting lot of folk they are, too!

Of particular note in this motion-picture version of The Woman in Black is the art direction and production design ? by Kave Quinn and Paul Ghirardani, respectively. They are remarkably well realized, with some beautifully detailed set d?cor and creepily appropriate properties and accessories. Also key in the storytelling is the cinematography of Tim Maurice-Jones, replete with swirling mists and evocatively shadowy lighting.

Of course, when setting a suspenseful mood in a movie, the director has an arsenal of tools at his command: dramatic music, sudden cuts to unexpected images, and the ever-popular ?loud and startling sound effect.? Our director, James Watkins, uses these tools skillfully, if occasionally, predictably.

In the final analysis, this film will give us (with one possible exception) no iconic moment in terror as in, for example, Wait Until Dark (1967) or Alien (1979). But I will say this: the climactic moments seemed to work effectively on Tuesday?s audience and, for the most part, on me as well.

This film has no ulterior motives insofar as having a timeless message to deliver. This is storytelling for the sake of a well-told story. Director James Watkins is only interested in telling a well-crafted story of ghostly thrills and surprises, effectively served up by a talented cast, who deliver believable, well-realized characters. In this I think the film is, for the most part, successful.

Finally, though perhaps not to everyone?s taste, as the fella said: ?If this is the kind of film you like, this is the kind of film you will like.?

Humpbacks share ocean, but not their songs

Humpback whales living on different sides of the southern Indian Ocean bellow very different songs, suggesting the behemoths don't mingle much, or at least they aren't freely sharing their musical material, a new study finds.

The results, published in the January issue of the journal Marine Mammal Science, give scientists more information about how culture in the form of these songs spreads among these whales that can reach lengths of 50 feet (15 meters).

Among humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae), males are the typical crooners, singing their tunes at a population's winter breeding grounds, along migration routes and at summer feeding grounds. The songs consist of complex arrangements of so-called themes, which are mixes of wails, moans and shrieks that get repeated in cycles lasting up to 30 minutes, according to the researchers.

Like disc jockeys fading out one song while starting another, humpback whales also transition between song themes; these transitional "phrases" combine bits from both the preceding and subsequent themes. (A past mathematical analysis revealed just how complex these songs are, using grammatical rules to string together hours-long melodies.)

    4. Humpbacks share ocean, but not their songs

While past research has suggested humpbacks sharing the same ocean basin also share similar songs, the new study suggests that's not the case for the two populations on both sides of the southern Indian Ocean.

The scientists used hydrophones to record humpback whale songs from 19 individuals in two spots along the coast of Madagascar and three areas along Western Australia during the 2006 breeding season. The team captured more than 20 hours of whale song (either whole song cycles or fragments of songs). Their analysis revealed a total of 11 different themes in both regions, with just one theme shared by both populations.

"Songs from Madagascar and Western Australia only shared one similar theme, the rest of the themes were completely different," said lead author Anita Murray, who conducted the research while a graduate student at Columbia University and the Wildlife Conservation Society.

Murray and colleagues say the reason for the song anomaly is a mystery.

"It could be the influence of singing whales from other ocean basins, such as the South Pacific or Atlantic, indicating an exchange of individuals between oceans which is unique to the Southern Hemisphere," said Murray, who is currently a doctoral student at the University of Queensland in Australia.

The researchers note the findings are limited by the fact that they are based on just one breeding season, and further research is needed to elucidate the reasons behind the whales' distinct songs.

As for why the two populations share one song, the researchers speculate that "some number of males from Madagascar and Western Australia could potentially be in acoustic contact during the feeding season and during this contact cultural transmission in song content would occur," they write in the journal article.

Senate clears way for vote on insider-trading ban (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Some members of Congress want to include executive branch employees in a bill that would ban lawmakers from using nonpublic information to made stock trades. The bill also would require public reporting of new securities transactions within 30 days, all part of an effort by Congress to boost its dismal approval ratings that are now in the teens.

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor told reporters Tuesday that if the bill now before the Senate isn't expanded to include the executive branch, he would add that provision to a bill expected to receive a House vote sometime in February.

A Senate amendment proposed by Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., would include the executive branch.

"Why would this rule not apply to executive employees in the administration?" Coburn asked.

Actually, parts of the bill already apply, but not the 30-day reporting requirement.

Standards of conduct for the executive branch prohibit government workers from "engaging in financial transactions using nonpublic information, or allowing the improper use of nonpublic information to further private interests." Senior executive branch officials must publicly file annual financial disclosure reports ? the same as members of Congress and their senior staff.

It was unclear when the Senate would be ready to vote on the legislation.

U.S. lawmakers already are subject to the same penalties as other investors who use non-public information to enrich themselves, though no member of Congress in recent memory has been charged with insider trading. In 2005, the Securities and Exchange Commission and Justice Department investigated then-Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist's sale of stock in his family's hospital company, but no charges were ever brought against the Tennessee Republican.

Voters may believe lawmakers who are paid an annual salary of $174,000 are enriching themselves ? especially if those voters saw a segment of CBS' "60 Minutes" in November. The show questioned trades by a House committee chairman, the current speaker and his predecessor's husband. Rep. Spencer Bachus, R-Ala., Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, and former Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., all denied wrongdoing. Bachus chairs the Financial Services Committee.

A recent Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll of registered voters found 56 percent favored replacing the entire 535-member Congress. Other polls this year have given Congress approval ratings between 11 percent and 13 percent, while disapproval percentages have ranged from 79 percent to 86 percent.

The bill is titled the Stop Trading on Congressional Knowledge (STOCK) Act. President Barack Obama has endorsed it.

The Senate bill would prohibit lawmakers from tipping off family members or others about non-public information that could influence a stock's price, in addition to the explicit ban itself. And it would direct the House and Senate ethics committees to write rules that would make insider trading violators subject to congressional punishment.

Mexican general, 29 soldiers on trial for homicide (AP)

MEXICO CITY ? A Mexican army general and 29 soldiers under his command in a town on the border with Texas are being tried on charges of torture, homicide, drug trafficking and other crimes, a top government official confirmed Tuesday.

Interior Secretary Alejandro Poire said that the crimes charged in the case are "deplorable and reprehensible" and that the troops are being tried in a military court.

Details about Gen. Manuel Moreno Avina and his subordinates' alleged reign of terror in the town of Ojinaga, across from Presidio, Texas, were first reported by the newspaper Reforma, which had access to some of the soldiers' testimony.

Shortly after Moreno arrived in Ojinaga in spring 2008, the troops under his command began kidnapping, torturing and killing suspects and stealing cars, computers, TV sets and even mattresses during raids on suspects' homes, according to the testimony reported by Reforma. They allegedly resold the stolen items as well as marijuana and cocaine they seized.

Poire did not confirm the allegations contained in Reforma's story, and the Defense Department didn't respond to requests for comment from The Associated Press.

According to the newspaper, prosecutors say at least 10 civilians were killed by soldiers or by hit men under the orders of Moreno in 2008 and 2009.

At least three of those slain were described as suspects in the custody of soldiers, including a man in his 20s who was detained in July 2008 and taken to the military garrison and given electroshocks until he died of a heart attack. His body allegedly was taken to a ranch, soaked in diesel and burned.

Seven other people were killed on the orders of Moreno by two hit men working for La Linea, a gang of assassins and corrupt police officers who act as enforcers for the Juarez Cartel, according to the testimony reported by Reforma.

Among the alleged victims were a secretary at the federal prosecutors' office in Ojinaga, a state police officer, a local police officer who stopped Moreno for speeding and driving under the influence of alcohol, and a businessman who filed a complaint with federal prosecutors and human rights officials after soldiers raided his house and stole money.

Soldiers also reportedly testified that Moreno often kept cars seized in legal and illegal raids and had them painted in military green.

Poire said the general and other soldiers are being tried in a military court in the Pacific coast state of Sinaloa and are all being held at a military prison in the state of Jalisco, it said.

Military investigators were first alerted to the soldiers' crimes in August 2009 by an anonymous complaint that they were collaborating with a criminal group, Defense Department officials told Reforma.

President Felipe Calderon deployed 50,000 soldiers and other military personnel to fight organized crime shortly after taking office in December 2006. More than 47,000 people have been killed in drug violence since Calderon launched his offensive, according to government figures.

The Inter-American Court on Human Rights and Mexico's own Supreme Court have ruled that soldiers who commit human rights violations against civilians should be tried in civilian courts. Calderon has said his government will comply with rulings, but so far it has not made the transition or agreed to give civilian courts military cases of murder.

A Human Rights Watch report on Mexico released in November said only 15 soldiers had been convicted following 3,671 investigations by military prosecutors into alleged human rights violations by soldiers against civilians from 2007 to June 2011. No soldier or state official had been convicted in any of more than 200 cases that the New York-based rights group documented in the report.
